Cell Culture Media provides energy for cell growth. Most medium compositions begin with basal media that is optimized by adding supplements to meet the needs of that particular process stage. For example, growth medium is optimized to increase biomass during cell expansion and feed medium is designed to promote high protein yield. Historically serum and other animal derived proteins were used as supplements, but have since been phased out of most biomanufacturing media primarily due to concerns about viral and prion contaminants. To better understand media, its evolution and its role in different process stages, please see the video below titled, “Understanding Chemically Defined Media in Bioprocessing.”
The Keck Graduate Institute and WuXi Biologics have teamed together to provide technical training videos called Two Minute Tuesday videos for the bioprocessing industry. They will deliver a new video topic every Tuesday that can quickly get you up-to-speed in understanding the complexities of biologics drug development and manufacturing.
